Omatek MD, others get NCS awards


The Nigeria Computer Society, the umbrella association for information technology (IT) professionals in the country given recognition awards to individuals and organisations in the fore front of IT development in Nigeria . Prominent among the awardees was Mrs. Florence Seriki, Managing director, Omatek Computers, leading indigenous computer manufacturing firm.

The NCS gave out the awards at the investiture of the society’s new president, Professor Charles O. Uwadia at the GoldenGate Restaurant in Lagos weekend.

The award was presented to Mrs. Seriki in recognition of her support and continuous contribution to the Nigeria Computer Society and the advancement of IT in Nigeria Amos Emmanuel, president, Programos Software was also given a certification of recognition for outstanding contribution to and the growth of the society.

Among the other awardees include Leo Stan Ekeh, managing director, Zinox Technologies and several other IT professionals and Long Service awards for staff of the NCS.

Professor Uwadia, in his address stated “I believe this ceremony should serve as a reminder to us of the labour of our heroes past; those who toiled day and night to bring the Society, albeit, the IT profession to the enviable position it is today; those who ensured that Computing, IT is a full profession on its own and not an appendage of other disciplines; those who struggled and fought for a Charter status for IT; those who are still toiling to ensure that Computers and associated devices become common place and regular items in our offices, schools and homes; those who are still battling to ensure that indigenous software are accorded recognition and patronage both locally and internationally; those who are in the vanguard of IT deployment and utilization in all facets of our national life. Today, we remember our leaders and members; both living and dead who initiated and carried out sweeping reforms that have made our Society an all inclusive association for different categories of practitioners”.

He noted that the NCS has come a long way from its inception in 1978 as Computer Association of Nigeria, CAN, which later became known as COAN, the association has made giant strides towards realizing its aims and objectives of promoting excellence and professionalism in the practice of Computing and IT in Nigeria.

The president commended that entire membership of NCS for vesting on him the mandate to serve the Society in the capacity of President for the next two years. “I consider this as an honour and privilege; I therefore promise to discharge the obligations attached to the position to the best of my ability, and with God on my side, he added.
